Narrative Theory

Propp - A Character theory in the context of media, such as print or electronic media texts or productions such as films and plays, is useful for analysing and understanding media in which people take on the role of an actor or social actor. Character theories are popular with academics teaching and researching media and film studies as they are useful for appreciating the structure of different types of media and the roles of the characters, fictional or otherwise that are portrayed in them.

Characters;

All of our characters were very much actors, this included the dancer. The dancer was to add volume to our media video and give a bit more entertainment to the audience, however did
not give a plot or story line to the video.

On the other hand the two other characters in the music video were very much along a story line, of being in love, and relating to the song titles 'Slow Love'. The two lovers gave the video a more defined line of what the music video was about, which was two people being in love.

The usual characters that are seen in films, music videos for example are;

- The Villain/Villains
- The Hero
- The donor - Who provides an object with some magic property
- The helper who aids the Hero
- The Princess - reward for the Hero and the object that the Villain wants
- Her Father - who rewards the Hero
- The dispatcher - Who sends the Hero on his way
- The false Hero

We didn't use any of these characters in our music video because it didn't fit conventions of a R&B music video.

However if our music video was perhaps a dance, or maybe rock, or hip hop, we could have used some of these stock characters. Examples of this are the Hoosiers.

Hero

Both of these music videos use these character, especially playing on the Heros and Villains to get a comic effect.
